The Department of History at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure track, assistant professor position in global history beginning in August, 2008, pending final administrative approval. The department is looking for a candidate whose research and teaching examine transnational forces or the intersections between cultures and religions. Field of specialization and chronological period are open, but priority will be given to applicants demonstrating an interest and training in comparative and theoretical approaches to racial/ethnic/national identities in a global context. 

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. at time of appointment and an ability to teach survey courses in world history and undergraduate and graduate courses on thematic and comparative topics in area of specialization. Applicants should demonstrate how their scholarship and teaching could contribute to the History Department’s concentrations in

  • 1) Identity Formation,
  • 2) Knowledge Production and Transmission, and/or
  • 3) Science, Technology, and the Environment.
