The Virginia Tech History Graduate Student Association is pleased to announce its 16th Annual Brian Bertoti Innovative Perspectives in History Graduate Conference will be held Friday, April 5th and Saturday, April 6th, 2013 on the Virginia Tech campus. On Friday evening, Dr. Monica Black, the conference’s keynote speaker and a historian of modern Europe from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will present her work on faith healing and its impact on West German society in the aftermath of World War II. Dr. Black’s lecture will examine the meanings of evil in the early history of West Germany –in a society struggling, powerfully if often obscurely, with the legacies of the Holocaust, fascism, and the Second World War.
On Saturday, Dr. Bryant Simon, a Distinguished Lecturer from the Organization of American Historians and Temple University historian, will present “Learning about America from Starbucks.” In this lecture, Dr. Simon will discuss how Starbucks’ success stems from its ability to package everyday desires of the middle-class millions and promise to ease their most profound anxieties. Dr. Simon argues that understanding Starbucks allows us to understand broad changes in American life, culture, and politics.
