With this issue of the Newsletter we've
begun several new features in response to suggestions from members.
We have taken steps to modify the US-centric
focus of previous Newsletters with Mona Gleason's regular feature
on Canadian happenings, and her feature article on "Internationalizing
SHCY."
Our second feature article addresses an
issue of concern to many researchers – accessibility of what
many consider to be "confidential" materials – case
files and patient records. Moira Hinderer discusses some of the problems
involved when privacy is an issue.
In addition this issue contains the first
of what we hope will be many bibliographic essays on topics in the
history of children and youth. Jim Marten's essay is a pithy commentary
on studies of "Children and War."
War is also the theme of Lisa Ossian's pedagogy
column, as she describes efforts to integrate the history of children
into the typical survey course.
The SHCY has undertaken many activities
aimed at creating a community of scholars who share an interest in
children and youth. "News from the Field," our organization's
gossip column/society page, is one of those activities. Use this column
to share your accomplishments -- one small way we can all get to know
the community better.
You will find throughout the Newsletter
other calls from the editors for participation from the community.
Think of this as an exercise in "active reading."
We encourage your responses: to Mona's request
for a discussion of internationalizing the organization; to Janet
and David who want to include more news about members; and to the
“Girls History” column where Miriam and Ilana have asked
for a discussion of sub-disciplines in the SHCY.
We need guest editors for the "Websightings"
column and for the next bibliographic essay.
Jim is planning a section devoted to recently
published encyclopedia sets on children, adolescence, girlhood, boyhood,
and others; please contact him with your thoughts – however
brief – about writing for and using encyclopedias.
We are always looking for ideas for feature
articles.
And we especially want to encourage submissions
from those of you who have successfully integrated the history of
children and youth into your survey courses. We are planning a follow
up on Lisa’s discussion of her survey experiences.
Material for the summer 2004 issue is due
June 15. Email Kathleen Jones or
Jim Marten, or any
of the contributing editors, with your ideas, suggestions, news, and
comments.
