Norrköping is today the best preserved textile mill town in Northern Europe. In the 17th century a number of spinning mills and cotton factories were established along the banks of the Motala River. By the mid 19th century, Norrköping was the second largest

industrial city in Sweden and 70 percent of Sweden's textiles were manufactured here. Many of the old buildings have been preserved and are today used by Linköping University.
