Earth
Images of the Earth, which NASA began
widely circulating in the 1960s, played an important role in raising public
awareness about the limits and vulnerability of our planet. South American
appears in the middle of this particular photograph, and Antarctica lies
near the bottom of the globe. The Galileo spacecraft took this photograph
on December 11, 1990, when it was 2 million km (1.3 million mi) from Earth.
