Theological and Pedagogical Praxis;
Revolutionary Theories of Social Empowerment and Political Oppression.
Overview:
In light of conditions
of social and political oppression that exist in our world today, various
theories have emerged which address mechanisms that perpetuate relationships
of socio-political domination. Considering the vast array of conditions
that sustain and contribute to oppressive relationships, complex theoretical
systems have been constructed which reflect the intricacy and breadth of
these issues. The theories in question span many disciplines, including
theology, educational theory, anthropology, sociology, history, gender
and race theory, philosophy, and political theory, among others.
This study limits itself to examining two of the more prominent and durable
theoretical systems: Liberation Theology and Critical Pedagogy. Although
these are two distinct theoretical systems, each with its own focus and
methodology, they share similar goals and exhibit a high degree of compatibility
with one another. In the course of this study, both systems will
be analyzed with respect to their historical development, theoretical underpinnings,
practical application, and mutual compatibility. Attention will also
be given, when possible, to the most vocal and credible objections raised
to each theory.
